Pahalgam Terror Attack 2025
On April 22, 2025, the tranquil Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam, often dubbed “mini-Switzerland,” became the site of a devastating terrorist attack. Militants opened fire on unsuspecting tourists, resulting in the deaths of 28 individuals and injuring over 20 others. This incident stands as one of the deadliest assaults on civilians in the region since the 2019 Pulwama bombing.
A Day of Horror
Around 2:30 PM, as tourists enjoyed pony rides and picnics amidst the lush greenery of Baisaran, four to six gunmen in military-style attire emerged from the surrounding forests. Eyewitnesses recounted that the attackers posed as policemen, asking for names and religious affiliations before opening fire. Reports indicate that non-Muslim men were specifically targeted, with some victims being asked to recite Islamic verses or checked for circumcision.
Among the deceased were 24 Indian tourists from various states, two locals from Jammu and Kashmir, and two foreign nationals from Nepal and the United Arab Emirates. The injured included individuals from Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra. Notably, a 26-year-old Indian Navy officer and an Intelligence Bureau official were among those killed.
Immediate Response
In the wake of the attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi cut short his visit to Saudi Arabia and convened an emergency meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security upon his return. Home Minister Amit Shah travelled to Srinagar to assess the situation and coordinate the security response. Security forces launched a massive manhunt, detaining about 100 suspected sympathisers.
The attack prompted widespread condemnation both domestically and internationally. U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who was visiting India at the time, expressed condolences and solidarity with India. The incident has also reignited tensions between India and Pakistan, with the latter expressing concern while denying direct involvement.
Impact on Tourism
This tragic event has cast a shadow over Kashmir’s tourism industry, which had been experiencing a resurgence since the revocation of Article 370 in 2019. The attack led to mass tourist departures, with airlines arranging special flights and maintaining fare stability amid evacuation efforts.
